The Red Sox hoped to leave their losing streak behind when they left Cleveland, however it followed them to the Motor City. The Sox had rookie Rubby De La Rosa on the mound vs. Drew Smyly for the Tigers. The Sox got to an early lead, but the potent offense of the Tigers would end up spelling disaster for both De La Rosa and the Sox.
The Sox got a run in the 1st when Holt got on and then Bogaerts got him in by hitting an RBI double. Sox 1-0. The Tigers were able to tie the game up in the bottom of the 3rd when De La Rosa gave up an RBI single to Romine. Sox 1-1. The Tigers took the lead when VMart hit a sac fly to score Hunter. Sox 1-2. De La Rosa found most of his trouble in the bottom of the 5th when he gave up back to back homers to Kinsler and Hunter. Sox 1-4. Gomes was able to get the Sox’s 2nd and final run of the game with a sac fly in the 6th. Sox 2-4.
De La Rosa took the mound in the 6th and got 2 quick outs, but after he gave up a single and a walk, John Farrell went out to get him. De La Rosa’s line for the night was 96 pitches, 5.2 IP, 9 H, 4 R, 2 BB and 5 Ks. Badenhop came out and got the final out of the 6th and also pitched a scoreless 7th inning. Capuano took the mound in the 8th and gave up a leadoff HR to old friend Victor Martinez. Sox 2-5. After Capuano gave up a triple to Holaday, he was out of the game and Mujica was in. Jackson hit a sac fly to have the Tigers leading 6-2. The Sox bats weren’t able to get anything going against the back end of the Tigers bullpen and lost the game 6-2.
