The Red Sox had an absolutely wondering Opening Day ceremony where the showed the 2013 World Championship banner and the players all got their rings. No one does a ceremony better than those Red Sox.
After that the Red Sox got to the game at hand against the Brewers. The Sox had Jake Peavy on the mound vs. Marco Estrada of the Brewers. Peavy pitched well, but didn’t get much run support and then everything fell apart for the Sox in the 9th when the bullpen showed its first sign of weakness.
Peavy gave up all the runs of his outing in the 2nd inning when he gave up a solo HR to Lucroy and then Gomes hit an RBI single to score Davis. Sox 0-2. In the bottom of the inning the Sox got one run back when Grady Sizemore hit a single and then Napoli got home on a throwing error. Sox 1-2. The Sox were able to tie the game when Will Middlebrooks hit a solo HR against Estrada. Sox 2-2. The starting pitchers on both sides kept the game tied and then handed it over to the bullpen. Peavy pitched 6 strong innings and his line for the night was 94 pitches, 6 IP, 6 H, 2 R, 2 BB and 4 Ks.
Burke Badenhop made his Fenway debut and pitched a scoreless 7th and 8th innings. Unfortunately Edward Mujica wouldn’t have such a positive Fenway debut. Mujica gave up a 2 run RBI double to Overbay, an RBI single to Gomez and an RBI single to Ramirez. Sox 2-6. Mujica was out of the game and Andrew Miller was in the game. Miller didn’t allow any more runs to score, but he didn’t exactly look crisp. Miller walked two batters before finally getting the 3rd out of the inning. The Red Sox bats had been cold for most of the game, so it goes without saying that they weren’t able to crack the scoreboard in the bottom of the inning.
Red Sox 2 Brewers 6 BOXSCORE
WP: Kintzler (1-0) LP: Mujica (0-1)
