Sox Fall in Series Opener to Diamondbacks

The Red Sox were facing off in a 3 game series against the Diamondbacks on Friday night.  The Sox had Jon Lester on the mound who has looked more like the ace the team wants and needs him to be in his last few outings.  Unfortunately, Lester took a step back and was not able to get out of the 5th inning.  The Sox rallied to tie the game, but in the end were unable to rally one more time when the Diamonbacks took the lead.

Lester struggled out of the gate last night.  Lester gave up a 2 run HR to Goldschmidt to have the Sox in a 0-2 hole.  Papi tied the game in the bottom of the inning when he hit a 2 run HR himself.  Sox 2-2.  In the 2nd inning the Sox took the lead when Drew and Holt both hit sac flies.  Sox 4-2.  Lester gave one of those runs back in the 3rd when he gave up an RBI single to former Sox Cody Ross.  The Diamondbacks not only tied the game, but took the lead in the 5th inning.  Prado and Ross both hit RBI doubles followed by an RBI single from Kubel.  Sox 4-6.  Lester clearly didn't have anything and was out of the game.  His pitching line for the night was 102 pitches, 4.1 IP, 11 H, 6 R, 0 BB and 6 Ks.

Thornton came out in relief in the 5th and also pitched a scoreless 6th inning.  In the bottom of the 6th inning the Sox once again tied the game when Stephen Drew hit a 2 run HR.  Sox 6-6.  The tie would be short lived when Pedro Beato took the mound in the 7th.  Beato gave up a solo HR to Cody Ross to have the Diamondbacks leading 7-6.  Beato got one out in the 8th and then Tazawa finished off the inning.  Tazawa also pitched a scoreless 9th, but the Sox didn't have any walk off magic last night.
