The Sox just came off a loss in a pitchers duel between Lackey and Weaver, so they hoped they would have better luck last night with Lester vs. King Felix. Unfortunately Lester would take a step backwards in terms of his pitching and the bullpen would follow suit. It was a game that the Mariners took control of early and won easily.
Lester looked good in the early innings, but once he hit the 4th inning he started to show signs of trouble. Lester allowed two runs to score in the 4th by giving up an RBI double to Smoak and then walking in a run. Sox 0-2. The Sox got Lester those two runs back in the top of the 5th when Nava hit an RBI single and then Brock Holt scored from 3rd on a wild pitch. Sox 2-2. The game would only stay tied for moments though when Lester gave up a leadoff HR to Ibanez in the bottom of the inning. Sox 3-2. In the 6th Lester gave up 2 singles and was out of the game. Alex Wilson took over and it went from bad to worse. Wilson gave up an RBI double to Saunders and an RBI single to Ibanez to have the Mariners leading 6-2 by the end of the inning. In the 7th Wilson gave up another RBI double to Smoak to have the Sox down 7-2.
Wilson was out of the game and newly called up De La Torre was in. De La Torre struggled as well as Daniel Nava who was playing his first game in CF. De La Torre gave up an RBI double to deep center over Nava's head, an RBI single to right and then another RBI double over Nava's head. With Ellsbury and Victorino both out with nagging injuries, Nava took one for the team playing CF, but that experiment didn't really go well. Sox 10-2. The Sox were finally able to grab a couple more runs when King Felix was out of the game, but it was way too little way too late. Napoli and Salty both hit RBI doubles to have the Sox trailing 10-4. The Mariners got one final run in the 8th off of De La Torre when he gave up an RBI groundout to Zunino. Sox 4-11.
The Sox have lost 3 games in a row and are only leading the AL East by 3.5 games.
