Sox Fall to Rays Behind Miller’s Poor Start

The Red Sox hit 4 HRs in this game including 3 off starter David Price, but they were never able to get out of the hole that was left by Andrew Miller’s poor start.  Miller showed some of those issues he has had with other ballclubs in last night’s start.  He only lasted 2.2 innings, gave up 5 hits and 7 runs because he also walked 5 batters.  The worst of the damage was Miller giving up a grand slam to Zobrist in the 2nd inning.  Miller was taken from the mound and replaced by Alfredo Aceves who walked in another run before pitching 2.1 innings of quality relief.  Aceves was replaced by Dan Wheeler who gave up a 2 run HR to former Sox Casey Kotchman.

Now while the pitching wasn’t in top form, the offense did come to play last night.  DMac got the Sox on the board in the 2nd with a solo HR.  That’s great for DMac who is still probably trying to convince the Sox to keep him around when Carl Crawford is scheduled to come back on Monday.  Jacoby Ellsbury got another solo HR in the 3rd.  Interestingly, Ellsbury has become only the 3rd lefty that David Price has given up a HR to in his career.  Go Ells!  Pedey got in on the HR business in the 6th and Marco joined the HR game in the 7th.  All of the offense from the Sox was scored via the HR last night.  The Sox scored 6 runs and on most nights that is enough to win the ballgame, but they were never able to play catch up from the first few poor innings.

The only upside is that those Blue Jays beat the Yanks again, so we didn’t lose a game in the standings, we just let the Rays get one game closer to us.
