The Red Sox were playing a day game today where they have dominated all season. The Red Sox were sending Josh Beckett to the mound who has been crazy good all season. The Red Sox were playing the Royals. How could they lose this game? There is no point in even watching.
Well, the Red Sox lost. The Sox went out to a quick 2-0 lead in the 3rd inning when Ellsbury hit a 2 RBI single to score Tek and Navarro. However to say that Josh Beckett found trouble in the 4th inning would be an understatement. Beckett walked the first two batters to start the inning. Beckett then gave up a 3 run HR to Billy Butler and the Sox went from winning to losing in the blink of an eye. Francoeur reached on a throwing error by Sutton and then Beckett gave up a double to Moustakas to give the Royals a 4-2 lead.
Unfortunately for Beckett, the Red Sox bats weren’t able to get those runs back for him. He pitched 7 innings, threw 109 pitches, gave up 5 H, 4 R, 3 BBs and 8 Ks. If you take out that 4th inning, he had a dominating performance, but of course you can’t do that. Pedey came to the plate in the 8th inning and not only extended his hitting streak, but hit a solo HR to bring the Sox within a run. In the 9th, Sutton got on base and Carl Crawford came out to pinch hit for Jason Varitek. Crawford hit a long, long ball that looked like a HR and ended up being a really long out as it was caught by Franceour on the warning track. Almost Carl…almost. That ball would have been out of the park in any other ballpark, but the park giveth and the park taketh away. Navarro ended the inning with a K and the Red Sox lost to split the series with the scuffling Royals.
