The Red Sox needed to win the game last night in order to at least split the series. The Sox had lefty Felix Doubront on the mound who had one of his worst starts his last time out vs. Ivan Nova of the Yankees. Doubront pitched better than he did the last time out, but still looked pretty hittable early on. The biggest news of the game was either Pedey being out of the lineup with a wrist injury or Farrell being ejected after a review in the 4th that ended up going the Yankees way. The Sox bats once again were cold and left the Bronx losing 3 out of 4.
The Yankees looked like they were going to score in the 1st inning when Soriano hit what looked like it would be a sac fly, however Ellsbury tried to tag up and go to 3rd and was tagged out before Beltran was able to get to the plate. It was a boneheaded move by Ellsbury and it cost the Yanks a run. The Sox were able to get a run in the 2nd when Herrera hits an RBI single to score Roberts. Sox 1-0. The Yankees were able to get back on top in the 3rd when Carlos Beltran took Dubi deep with a 2 run HR. Sox 1-2.
In the 4th is where the controversy happened. The umpires initially ruled that the inning ended with a bang bang double play. Joe Girardi asked for it to be reviewed and the video showed that Cervelli made it to the base before Nap had the ball controlled in his glove, so he was called safe. The call looked to be the right one, but it sent Farrell off since the night before he asked for a review and MLB botched the call. Farrell went out to complain and then was immediately ejected. Farrell had some choice words for the umps before he headed for the clubhouse. Run still scored. Sox 1-3.
In the top of the 6th the Sox were able to get within one run with a solo no doubter bomb from Mike Napoli. Sox 2-3. Felix Doubront was on the mound into the 7th inning and looking a lot sharper as the innings went by. Dubi got two outs in the 7th inning before giving up a double to Beltran and was done for the night. Doubront’s pitching line for the night was 101 pitches, 6.2 IP, 7 H, 3 R, 3 BB and 2 Ks. Capuano came out and got the final out to end the inning. Papi had what looked like a hit in the 8th, but Ichiro was able to make a fantastic catch to turn it into an out. Napoli doubled after him, but no one was able to get him home. Capuano pitched a scoreless 8th inning as he has continued to impress. The Sox were unable to get anything going in the 9th and fell to the Yanks once again. This game was frustrating on a variety of levels, but most of all was probably that the Sox got more hits than the Yankees, but they were unable to turn the hits into runs.
