The Red Sox came into the Bronx to face the Yankees and Jacoby Ellsbury in pinstripes for the first time. Clay Buchholz was on the mound and he hoped to have a better outing than his first start where he was pummeled by the Brewers. Buchholz pitched better, but still had shaky moments that allowed the Yanks to get on the board and run away with the win.
For the first few innings the game had a pitching duel all over it. Pineda and Buchholz were both breezing through until Buch found a wee bit of trouble in the 4th inning. Ellsbury got on due to a fielding error by Herrera and was able to come around to score by an RBI single by McCann. The Yanks got their 2nd run in the inning when Soriano hit into a double play, but Beltran was able to come to the plate. Sox 0-2.
At the same time Pineda was just mowing through the Sox lineup. Pineda didn’t give up a hit until the top of the 5th while his team was able to get more than enough runs against Buchholz. The Yankees were able to get 2 more runs in the bottom of the 5th. Dean Anna hit a solo HR and then Ells hit an RBI single to score Jeter. Sox 0-4. Buchholz pitched 6 innings and while he pitched much better than his last outing, he was still clearly in line for the loss. Buch’s pitching line for the night was 94 pitches, 6 IP, 7 H, 4 R, 2 ER, 0 BB and 6 Ks. The Sox were finally able to score a run against Pineda when Nava hit a solo HR in the 7th. Craig Breslow made his first appearance since being activated off the DL and pitched a scoreless 7th and then Chris Capuano pitched a scoreless 8th. However the Sox bats were pretty cold last night other than Nava’s HR against Pineda and they dropped the first game of the series.
