Jon Lester took the mound for the Red Sox last night hoping to get himself another win and get the Sox a sweep of the Twins. Unfortunately, he’d get neither. Lester pitched well, but unfortunately the Sox bats seemed to think Josh Beckett was on the mound and gave him little to no run support.
Lester gave up a quick run in the 1st inning on an RBI single to Jim Thome. Mauer was walked earlier in the inning and came around to score. Lester gave up another run in the 6th inning when Joe Mauer hit a ground rule double which was ruled fan interference because a fan reached out and touched it. Revere was given the plate and the Twins were up 2-0. The Sox snagged a run back in the bottom of the 6th when Scutaro hit an RBI single to score Mike Aviles. Papi tied the game up when he hit a HR against Perkins. Remember when David Ortiz wasn’t even in the lineup against lefties because he couldn’t get anything going, not anymore!
The game didn’t stay tied for long. Lester, for some reason, came back out in the 8th inning. He walked Joe Mauer again and then gave up a double to Thome to score Mauer. Game untied. Lester was replaced by Alfredo Aceves and for the first time in a while, we’ve seen him really struggle. Aceves gave up a double to Valencia to score Thome. He then gave up another RBI single. In Aceves’ defense the ball looked easily catchable in right field if it was anyone else other than Mike Aviles out there. In Aviles’ defense, he’s an infielder who just happens to be playing the outfield. Aceves left the mound with the Sox trailing 5-2. The Sox wouldn’t be able to get anything going for the rest of the game and Joe Nathan got himself his 9th save of the season. With that save, Nathan is now the leader in saves in the Twins organization. So we lost, but congrats Joe!
The Sox are off today and then tomorrow they head off for a series with the Mariners on the west coast.
