The Red Sox headed out for the first west coast trip of the season which meant facing the red hot A’s and also having games at 10pm for the weary eyed fans back home in Boston. The Sox had Jake Peavy on the mound vs. Scott Kazmir for the A’s. Peavy pitched alright, but not spectacularly and once again the Sox bats had problems putting runs on the board.
Peavy didn’t pitch poorly, but once again suffered having the worst run support of any of the Sox starters. Peavy gave up his first run in the 2nd when Vogt hit an RBI sac grounder to score Jed Lowrie. Sox 0-1. Peavy gave up another run in the 3rd when he gave up a solo HR to Cespedes and then gave up his 3rd run in the 4th when he gave up an RBI single to Vogt. Sox 0-3. Given how stagnant the Sox offense has been, a 3 run deficit seemed like about a million.
Dustin Pedroia was able to make a dent in it though in the top of the 6th when he hit a 2 run HR to pull the Sox within one run. Peavy took the mound in the 7th inning, but Farrell went out to get him when he issued a walk to Vogt. Chris Capuano was in the game and unfortunately was not able to keep the inherited runner from scoring. Capuano gave up an RBI single to Jaso that brought Vogt to the plate. Sox 2-4. Mujica pitched in the 8th and even though he gave up back to back singles to start the inning, he got through it without allowing a run to score. The Sox had a moment in the 9th when Pedey hit a double and then AJ Pierzynski hit a ball that was a couple feet short of a game tying homerun. Unfortunately Coco Crisp made the play to end the game with a Sox loss.
