Sox Falls to As On Cold And Dreary Night

On a wet and dreary day, the Red Sox were not able to beat the Athletics for 2 days in a row.  Felix Doubront didn’t have his best stuff last night.  He was only able to go 4 innings, however he also struck out 8 batters.

Doubtront had a rough first inning.  This is becoming a pattern with our starting pitchers.  Doubront needed over 30 pitches to get out of the first inning.  Doubront gave up an RBI single to Cespedes, however he was able to limit the damage to that.  Doubront kept on until the 4th inning when he found himself in some trouble again.  Dubi gave up an RBI double to Pennington.  Sox 0-2.  Then Dubi gave up an 2 run RBI double to Weeks.  Sox 0-4.  The final run scored on a wild pitch.  Sox 0-5.  Doubront got out of the inning, but the damage was done.  Doubront’s line for the night was kind of a strange one.  He was striking guys out left and right, however he also wasn’t able to get to the 5th inning.  Doubront ended up with 4 IP, 94 pitches, 6 H, 5 R, 2 BBs, 8 Ks.

The bullpen finished off the game and they all had scoreless outings.  Scott Atchison came out and got 2 innings of scoreless relief.  Rich Hill came out and pitched 1.2 innings of relief.  Ironically for the lefty specialist the only hit he gave up was to lefty Josh Reddick.  Matt Albers finished the game off with 1.1 innings of scoreless relief.

The offense last night did not get enough runs to make up for the shaky start.  The Red Sox had a hard time against rookie Parker.  In my experience, teams tend to have a hard time against a pitcher they haven’t seen before.  The Sox didn’t get on the board until the 4th when Dustin Pedroia scored on a Papi sac grounder.  Sox 1-5.  The Sox had nothing else going on until the 9th when Mike Aviles hit an RBI single to score two.  Sox 3-5.  Pedroia was up at the plate as the go ahead run.  Unfortunately he ground out to second to end the game.  The bats seemed as cold and dreary last night as the weather.  The bright spot was Cody Ross who while he looked like Scuba Steve, he went 3 for 4 on the evening.

Red Sox 3  Athletics 5 BOXSCORE
