Sox Falters in the Late Innings and Give Away Game to the Rays

The Red Sox headed back to Fenway for the final homestand of the season.  The Sox have a series against the Rays and then a series against the Yankees.  The Sox had Clay Buchholz on the mound against Alex Cobb of the Rays.  Clay had a lead going into the 8th inning, however the Rays would turn that around scoring 5 runs and turn his positive performance into just another loss.

The game started as a well pitched game on both sides.  It stayed 0-0 until the 4th inning when Nava hit an RBI double to score Cespedes.  Sox 1-0.  Clay was doing his job on the other side and was coasting through until the 8th inning.  Clay had a low pitch count and there was hope he might be able to pitch another complete game.  Unfortunately the wheels fell off Clay’s outing in the 8th and he’d go from being the winning pitcher to the losing one.  Buchholz gave up an RBI double to Zobrist that scored Franklin and Guyer and gave the Rays the lead.  The runs scored on a play to left field that looked like if Cespedes positioned himself correctly could have been a caught ball.  Buchholz then gave up an RBI single to DeJesus to have the Rays leading 3-1.

Buchholz left the mound in line for the loss instead of in line for the win.  Tommy Layne took to the mound in hopes of getting the 3rd out of the inning and stopping the bleeding.  Layne wouldn’t be able to get the job done though as he gave up a 2 RBI single to Loney to have the Rays now leading 5-1.  Junichi Tazawa came to the mound and got the final out of the inning, but the damage had been done.  In the bottom of the 8th the Sox got one of those runs back when Jemile Weeks hit an RBI sac fly to score Betts from 3rd.  Matt Barnes pitched the 9th and gave up a solo homerun to Matt Joyce to have the Rays back up by 4 runs and easily winning 6-2.

Red Sox 2  Rays 6  BOXSCORE

WP: Cobb (10-8)  LP: Buchholz (8-10)
