The Red Sox hoped that they could take the series with a win last night with rookie Rubby De La Rosa on the mound. Unfortunately De La Rosa wasn’t able to be as crisp as Workman was the night before and the Sox offense was no where to be found.
De La Rosa put the Sox in a hole early when he gave up 3 runs in the 1st inning. De La Rosa gave up and RBI double to Jones and then a 2 run HR to Chris Davis. Sox 0-3. He was able to settle in after that, but the damage had already been done. De La Rosa did give up another run in the 4th inning when he gave up an RBI single to Hundley. Sox 0-4. The score would have been 5-0 when the ump called Markakis safe on a force out play to end the inning, but Farrell appealed and he was in fact called out. It would all be for not, but it was nice to have something go the way of the Sox.
De La Rosa took the mound in the 6th inning and after getting two outs, he issued a walk and Farrell went out to get him. Mujica came in and got the final out of the inning. In the top of the 7th, the skies opened up and the game officially went into a rain delay for about an hour and a half. Mujica did come back out and pitched a scoreless 7th inning before handing the ball over to Chris Capuano in the 8th. Cap didn’t have his best outing since he walked two runners in with the bases loaded. Sox 0-6.
You noticed I didn’t mention the offense, mainly because it did not exist. The Sox weren’t able to get anything going against Chen or the O’s bullpen. The Sox ended 3 innings with double plays, so even when they were lucky enough to get on base, it was erased quickly.
Red Sox 0 Orioles 6 BOXSCORE
WP: Chen (7-2) LP: De La Rosa (1-2)
