The Red Sox had one more game until the All Star Break. The game matched up David Price against his former mentee Chris Archer. The game went back and forth, but in the end the Rays came out on top. The Sox lost two heading into the break, but they still have the best record in the AL East.
Mookie Betts started the game off with a lead off home run against Archer. Sox 1-0. The Rays tied it up immediately though when Price gave up an RBI single to Longoria. Sox 1-1. The Rays then took the lead in the 3rd when Longoria hit an RBI sac fly to score Souza Jr. Sox 1-2. The Sox bats had a hard time getting anything going against Archer and the game would stay 2-1 Rays until the 7th inning. The Sox jumped back out in front when Dustin Pedroia hit a 2 run homer that chased Archer from the game. Sox 3-2. Archer went from being in line for the win to the loss and Price went from being in line for the loss to the win in the span of a single pitch.
The Sox bullpen immediately had trouble though. Matt Barnes came out for the bottom of the 7th and gave up a walk and a single. With a runner at 3rd, Joe Kelly came in to try to limit the damage. Kelly gave up an RBI sac fly to Dickerson to tie the game up. Sox 3-3. Joe Kelly went back out for the 8th inning and this is when the Rays took the lead. Kelly gave up a 2 run homer to Miller to have the Rays up 5-3. The Sox offense wasn’t able to stage a comeback in the top of the 9th and the Rays would win the game and take the series.
