The Red Sox has numerous opportunities to win the game yesterday, but they just kept giving it back to the Jays until they took the lead for good and rode to victory. Buchholz got an early lead, but then gave it right back in the early inning. The Sox took the lead again in the later innings, but then Buchholz once again gave it right back to the Jays. If the Sox are going to have any chance this season these are the kind of games they have to find a way to win.
The Red Sox took an early lead when RA Dickey’s knuckleball didn’t seem to be knuckling and David Ortiz took him deep for a 3 run HR in the 1st. Unfortunately Clay Buchholz struggled right out of the gate as well and gave that lead right back. Buchholz gave up an RBI double to Bautista, an RBI groundout to Rasmus and then a game tying RBI ground rule double to Thole. Sox 3-3. That took the air out of the sails of the Sox, but at least Buch didn’t give the lead to the Jays. The game stayed tied until the 5th inning when Nava hit a ground rule double and then Bogaerts hit a double of his own to bring Nava to the plate. Sox 4-3.
The Sox had the lead, but it wouldn’t last for long. In the 6th inning it all unraveled for the Sox. Buchholz was still on the mound, but maybe he shouldn’t have been. Buchholz walked Thole and then the Jays tied the game when Goins hit a triple to bring Thole to the plate. Buchholz almost got out of the inning without giving up the lead, but then Bogaerts made an errant, rushed throw to 1st when Reyes was running down the line and Goins scored on the botched play. Sox 4-5. Buchholz was done after 6 innings and it was such a frustrating performance. Buchholz wasn’t able to capitalize on opportunities and allowed the Jays to not only stay in the game, but go ahead on his mistakes.
Andrew Miller took the mound in the 7th inning and didn’t have his usual dominant inning. Miller gave up a leadoff homerun to Jose Bautista to put the Jays up by 2 runs. After that Miller was able to retire the next 3 batters in order, but the damage was done. Sox 4-6. The Sox bats didn’t have any luck against the Jays bullpen and the Jays were easily able to ride to victory. The Sox will hope to salvage the series with a split tomorrow.
