The Red Sox hoped to right the ship after losing the first game of the series to the Brewers with Clay Buchholz on the mound. Unfortunately, Clay didn’t look sharp and didn’t last 5 innings. The Sox were able to tie the game up late, but then fell in extras to have the Brewers assured to win the series against the hometown boys.
Clay didn’t take long before giving up his first run of the evening. Buchholz gave up an RBI single to Ramirez in the 1st inning to have the Brewers leading 1-0. Clay gave up 2 more runs in the 2nd inning with a solo HR to Mark Reynolds and then another solo HR to Carlos Gomez. Sox 0-3. Not the best start of the season for Clay. The Sox bats got a couple of those runs back in the bottom of the 2nd inning when a Pierzynski hit an RBI groundout and Herrera got on by way of a fielding error to bring Gomes to the plate. Sox 2-3.
However Clay wasn’t able to stop the bleeding and gave up 3 more runs in the 3rd inning. Clay gave up an RBI single to Khris David and then a 2 run RBI double to Scooter Gennett. Sox 2-6. In the bottom of the 3rd Mike Napoli suddenly made this a ballgame again when he hit a 3 run HR to have the Sox within a run. Sox 5-6. Napoli seemed locked in during the start of the season. Buchholz pitched a scoreless 4th inning and when he found himself in trouble again in the 5th inning, Farrell came out to get him in favor of Chris Capuano. Buchholz’s line for the night was the unimpressive 72 pitches, 4.1 IP, 13 H, 6 R, 0 BB and 3 Ks. No bueno.
Capuano finished off the 5th inning without any more runs hitting the scoreboard. Capuano also pitched a 1-2-3 6th inning. In the bottom of the inning the Sox had a real chance to not only tie the game, but take the lead. The Sox had two runners on and no outs, but AJ Pierzynski took some wind out of Fenway’s sails when he hit into a doubleplay. Luckily the Sox were able to tie the game when Herrera got to 1st by way of a fielding error and Xander crossed the plate. Sox 6-6. Capuano found himself in some trouble in the 7th inning and he had runners at 1st and 3rd with one out. Capuano was out and Brandon Workman was in the game. Workman was able to work some magic and get out of the inning without a run scoring. Workman got both batters to strikeout and he was out of the inning.
Workman also pitched a scoreless 8th inning before handing the ball over to Koji Uehara for the 9th. Koji was his usual dominant self, striking out the side on 13 pitches. Junichi Tazawa didn’t have an easy inning, but none the less, he was able to pitch a scoreless 10th inning to keep the game rolling. Unfortunately the Sox bats just weren’t able to get that one needed run to score the plate as the innings kept rolling by. Burke Badenhop took the mound in the 11th inning and would end up being the Sox undoing. Badenhop gave up an RBI double to Schafer to have the Brewers up 7-6. Andrew Miller came in for the final out of the inning and was able to get Gennett to strike out, but the damage had already been done. K-Rod came in for the Brewers and struck out the side to send the Sox home in defeat.
