Sox Lose AGAIN to the Twins!

The Red Sox looked once again like they were on their way to a win against the Twins and then before the 9 innings was over they found a new and interesting way to blow the game.  Clay Buchholz took the mound for the Sox and pitched 7 strong innings, however he would not be able to lead his team to a win.

Clay Buchholz continued to look like that pitcher that we need him to be in order to have any chance whatsoever this season.  Buchholz looked like he was in control from the first inning.  Buchholz got into and out of trouble in the 2nd inning without any damage.  Clay gave up a run in the 5th inning however it was unearned.  However the error was a throwing error from Clay, so if I was making the rules for statistics then the run would be earned.  Buchholz gave up an RBI single to Revere in order to score Carroll.  Clay left the mound in line for the win after the 7th inning with the Sox clinging to a 2-1 lead.  Buchholz’s line for the night was 103 pitches, 7 IP, 7 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 1 BB and 3 Ks.

The Sox offense got the first two runs of the game to support Buchholz, but it would end up not being enough.  In the 1st, the Sox scored a single run when Carl Crawford hit an RBI double to score Kalish.  The second run came from Mike Aviles who hit a solo HR in the 2nd inning.  This was Aviles’ 11th homerun of the season which is a career record for him.

The 8th inning is when things started going awry for the Sox.  Andrew Miller came on in relief of Buchholz and did not have his best outing.  Miller issued a walk, a single and another walk to load the bases with no outs.  Clinging to a 1 run lead that was not ideal.  Bobby V decided to go with his closer and Alfredo Aceves was in the game.  Aceves “blew the save” even though I hate that statistic since he pitched well, but allowed a run to score on a sac fly to Morneau.  Aceves finished off the 8th and the Sox were tied 2-2.

In the bottom of the 8th, the Sox bats immediately gave the lead back.  Pedro Ciriaco came in to pinch hit for for Ryan Kalish and hit a HR to the Monster.  This was Pedros first career homerun in the major leagues.  The Sox got another run when Cody Ross hit an RBI single to score Pedroia and the Sox lead 4-2.  Aceves was back out on the mound for the 9th and the troubles continued.  Aceves gave up an RBI single to Carroll and the Sox were clinging to a one run lead.  Sox 4-3.  Aceves gave up a single to Revere and then with a 3-2 count Aceves gave up a 3 run HR to Joe Mauer.  That would do it and the Sox would fall 6-4.

That game had a lot of highs and lows, however it was a gut wrenching loss.  The Sox don’t have much of a chance if they ever did unless they can win games like that.  For the past two night, the Sox have looked in control of the game until they just let it go and end up walking out of the park with a loss.
