The Red Sox haven’t had much luck so far on this west coast road trip and they’d once again suffer a one run loss, this time in extra innings. Rubby De La Rosa started for the Sox and he looked like someone who should stay in the rotation, not someone who should be sent down when it’s Clay’s next turn to pitch. The Sox bats were cold as ice though and the game would be tied late and go into extras only to have the A’s walk off in the 10th for their 3rd win in a row against the hapless Sox.
The game stayed scoreless until the 3rd inning when the A’s were able to eek out a run against De La Rosa when Vogt hit a triple and then Callapso hit an RBI sac fly to bring Vogt home. Holt made a great catch and a good through, but not good enough to stop Vogt from scoring. Holt though is continuing to show his value to the Sox, no matter where they play him in the field. De La Rosa would end up pitching 7 strong innings and even though he wasn’t in line for the win, he should did show the ballclub a mighty fine performance. His pitching line was 100 pitches, 7 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 1 BB and 7 Ks. De La Rosa is most likely headed back to Pawtucket in the coming week, but this performance showed that isn’t where he belongs.
In the top of the 8th the Red Sox finally were able to get a single run against the A’s, however it was scored because of an error by the umps and then some gutsy baserunning from Dustin Pedroia. Pedey was on 3rd with 2 outs when Napoli came to the plate. Napoli swung on strike three and the catcher caught the ball, however the umpire said that the ball bounced before it landed is his glove and called it a foul ball. If this was a reviewable play then Nap would be out and the inning would be over, but it is not so the Sox got another chance. On the next pitch the ball dribbled in front of the catcher and Pedey broke for home. Pedey was able to get in before being tagged out and the game was tied. The A’s were livid and as a result their manager Melvin was ejected.
Breslow came out and pitched the 8th. He got 2 outs before giving up a single and then Farrell went with Tazawa to face Cespedes. Taz got Cespedes to line out and the inning was over. Tazawa pitched a scoreless 9th and then handed the ball over to Edward Mujica for the 10th. Mujica issued a walk to Callapso and then Punto hit a sac bunt to move him over. Farrell went with Uehara in hopes of keeping the game tied 1-2. Coco Crisp hit the first pitch he saw and hit an RBI single to right to have the A’s walk off in the 10th.
