Sox Lose Behind Buchholz’s Strong Start

Clay Buchholz came off the DL for the Sox after a bad case of esophagitis that landed him in the hospital for a few days.  He was up against David Price and many wondered if Clay would have some rust that would need to be shaken off.  Buchholz pitched well, however not well enough to win.  He would have trouble in the 7th and the bullpen wasn’t able to bail him out.

Buchholz looked locked in and ready to go as the game started.  It didn’t look like the lay off hurt him at all.  Buchholz gave up a run on a sac fly to Rodriguez in the 3rd inning.  A 2nd run would come in the 5th when Keppinger was able to score when Molina reached on a fielding error from Mike Aviles.  Game tied 2-2.  Buchholz got two K’s to end the inning and was on his way.  In the 7th, Clay started the inning with a walk and a HBP.  Bobby V came out to get Buchholz and Matty Albers was in for the 7th.  They had Albers intentionally walk Matsui and then Albers unintentionally walked Lobaton to have the Rays tie the game 3-3 with the bases still loaded.  Johnson hit a sac fly for the Rays to take the lead 4-3.  Andrew Miller came into the game got the final out of the 7th.  The Rays were able to score 2 runs in the 7th without the benefit of a hit.  No bueno.  In the 8th, Miller gave up a HR to Upton to give the Rays a 5-3 lead which would end up being the final score.

As for the Sox offense, they had a little bit here or there.  The Sox scored their first two runs in the 3rd inning with a HR from Will Middlebrooks.  That was his 11th HR of the season and it’s nice to see him back in the lineup.  In the 6th, the Sox scored their 3rd and final run when Cody Ross was dancing over at 3rd base and David Price threw the ball away on a check on him at 3rd.  Ross would come home to score.  The Sox had a chance to score again in the 8th when Ellsbury hit a leadoff double, however the rest of the offense was not able to bring him home.  Ciriaco attempted a bunt to get Ells to 3rd and it was very much not successful.  Papi walked and then Ross and Middlebrooks both flied out to end the inning.
