The Red Sox finally hit 500 with their mini sweep of the Reds, however they would need to beat the Rangers in Texas in order to stay there and start climbing above 500. Unfortunately Clay Buchholz struggled out of the gate and Yu Darvish was a pitching force that had a no hitter into the 9th inning only to lose it at the hands of David Ortiz. The Sox lost, but fans seem to celebrate that the at least were able to take the no hitter from the Rangers and Darvish.
Clay Buchholz didn’t let much time go on before he let a run score. He gave up a single run in the 1st when old friend Adrian Beltre hit an RBI double to deep left to score Elvis Andrus. Sox 0-1. Clay gave up a couple more runs in the 3rd when Prince Fielder hit an RBI single and then Rios hit a sac fly. Sox 0-3. The game wasn’t going Clay’s way, but it really came unglued in the 5th inning. Buchholz gave up an RBI single to Rios to have the Rangers up 4-0. Clay was done for the night and Capuano was in to finish the inning. Unfortunately he wasn’t able to stop the bleeding and the Rangers put a crooked number up on the board. Capuano balked, Moreland hit an RBI single, Arencibia hit an RBI sac fly and then Martin finished off the inning with a 2 run HR to have the Rangers up 8-0.
While the Sox pitchers were struggling, Yu Darvish was pitching a perfect game into the 7th inning. David Ortiz came to the plate in the 7th inning and hit a ball that dropped into the outfield. It looked like it should be a hit, but it was scored an error on Rios. Darvish’s perfect game was over, but he still had the no hitter going, albeit on a technicality. Napoli walked, but there was no other damage in the inning. Edward Mujica pitched the 7th inning and had himself a nice 1-2-3 inning followed by Craig Breslow pitching a scoreless 8th. Yu Darvish took to the mound in the 9th inning still clinging to the no hitter. Darvish had 2 outs in the inning and then David Ortiz came to the plate again. Many believe that David Ortiz got a legit hit in the 7th inning that was ruled an error and now in the 9th he’d have a chance to break up Darvish’s no hitter once again. Papi came through once again and hit a single right through the shift to end Darvish’s no hitter bid. The Sox still lost 8-0, but they walked off the field feeling like they had a little bit to celebrate.
