Brandon Workman was coming off his 6 game suspension and hoped to show just how much he has been missed. Unfortunately for Workman and the Sox, he looked like he had a lot of rust on him and had a pretty rough outing in the Bronx. On the other side, the Sox offense couldn’t muster a single run against the Yankees Nuno.
The Yankees got on the scoreboard in the 1st inning when Teixeira hit a sac fly to score Jeter from 3rd. Sox 0-1. Workman kept the score 0-1 until the 4th inning when he gave up a 2 run HR to Johnson and then a solo HR to Gardner to have the Yanks leading 4-0. Workman pitched through the 7th inning, but was in line for the loss due to some rust hanging on his pitching and the offense not being able to get those runs back. Breslow came to the mound in the 8th and the outing went from bad to worse. Breslow gave up a 2 run bomb to Brian McCann to have the Yankees up 6-0.
I hadn’t mentioned the offense yet, mainly because it was non-existent in this game. Nuno had struggled in his last two starts with the Yankees, but all he seemed to need to get himself right was to pitch against the Red Sox. Nuno only gave up 2 hits in his 5.2 innings worth of work and then the Yankees bullpen did the rest. The only Red Sox who were able to get hits were Brock Holt, Jonny Gomes and Stephen Drew, but none of them were able to translate into runs. All in all, it was a frustrating loss for the Sox as the approach the All Star Game and the trade deadline.
Red Sox 0 Yankees 6 BOXSCORE
