Sox Lose First in Series With the Yanks

The Red Sox came into Yankee Stadium for the first time this season and ended up leaving with a lopsided loss due to a bad start by Aaron Cook and a worse finish by Mark Melancon.

Cook took the mound for the Red Sox and when he left the Yankees had scored 6 runs.  In the 1st inning, it looked like Cook would have the ground ball he needed to turn the double play and get out of the inning, however Aviles took way too long to make the turn and Teixeira was safe at 1st.  Then Ibanez hit a 2 run HR to give the Yanks a 3-1 lead.  In the 3rd, the Yanks tacked on another run on a Teixeira sac fly to give the Yanks a 4-2 lead.  However, every time the Sox would look like they might make a run in this game and make it interesting, Cook would just give the momentum right back to the Yanks.  In the 4th, Cook gave up a 2 run HR to Russell Martin and now the Yankees were leading 6-3.  It definitely was not Aaron Cook’s day.

Franklin Morales came out in the 5th and pitched a scoreless 5th and 6th innings.  You would have to say that the Red Sox would have had a lot more chances in this game if Morales had started than Cook.  Morales looks like someone who should clearly still be in the rotation.  Andrew Miller pitched a scoreless 7th inning including two strikeouts.  Mark Melancon pitched the 8th and that is when this game went from bad to worse.  Melancon had two outs and the bases loaded when Granderson came to the plate.  Granderson hit a no doubt grand slam HR off Melancon and the Yanks would now be lead 10-3.

The Sox offense was able to score 3 runs against Phil Hughes and they were all solo HRs.  In the 1st, Dustin Pedroia hit a solo HR to give the Sox a 1-0 lead.  It would be the last time the Sox would lead in the game.  In the 3rd, Carl Crawford would hit his 1st HR of the season to bring the Sox within a run at the time.  In the 4th, the Sox scored their final run with a solo HR from Jarrod Saltalamacchia.  After the 4th, Phil Hughes really settled down and the Sox offense couldn’t really get anything off of him.  The Yankees bullpen did their job in the 8th and 9th and the Sox went quickly.
