Sox Lose for Final Time in 2012

The Red Sox have lost their last 7 games heading into Wednesday’s game.  The Sox were sending Daisuke Matsuzaka to the mound for what is most likely his last outing in a Sox uniform.  Dice-K never seemed to get his legs under him this season and has been continuously hampered with injuries.

The Sox gave Dice-K a teeny tiny lead in the 1st with a Cody Ross RBI single.  Sox 1-0.  However, Dice-K continued his season of struggle in tonight’s outing.  Dice-K didn’t make it out of the 3rd inning while giving up 5 runs. Dice-K gave up a 3 run HR to Curtis Granderson in the 2nd inning and then gave up a 2 run HR to Cano in the 3rd inning.  Sox 1-5.  Dice-K was done for the night and Clayton Mortensen was on the mound in relief in the 3rd.  Mortensen finished the 3rd, a scoreless 4th, but then in the 5th Morty gave up a 2 run HR to Cano as well.  Sox 1-7.  Mortensen was done for the night and Pedro Beato was in the game to finish the 5th inning.  Beato started the 6th inning, however he got pulled after he loaded the bases with one out.  Scott Atchison came into the game in hopes of stopping the bleeding.  Unfortunately, Atchison gave up a 2 run RBI single to Cano to have the Yanks leading 9-1.

The Sox got one of those runs back in the top of the 7th when Jose Iglesias hit an RBI single to score Ciriaco.  Sox 2-9.  Chris Carpenter took the mound for the 7th inning and gave up a solo HR to Curtis Granderson.  Sox 2-10.  Carpenter then took a bad game and made it even worse (if this is even possible) by giving up a 2 run RBI double to Ichiro.  Sox 2-12.  Carpenter was done and Breslow was in the game to finish the 8th inning.  Breslow gave up an RBI single to Swisher and then a sac fly to Teixeira.  Sox 2-14.  Tazawa took the mound in the bottom of the 8th and while they were all long, loud outs, he had himself a 1-2-3 inning.  Not shockingly, the Sox were unable to rally in the 9th and finished their season with 8 straight losses.

The Sox clearly failed in every way possible to play spoiler down the stretch.  The Yankees won and the Orioles lost, so that leaves the Yankees as the winners of the AL East and the Orioles heading to Texas to play the Rangers in the wild card game.  This game seemed to sum up so many things that were frustrating about this season.  2012 is in the books for the Sox and we can hope to look for bigger and better things in 2013.
