The Sox hoped to win yesterday to not limp into the All Star Break and have a winning record for their west coast trip. The Sox had rookie Brandon Workman on the mound who was making his first major league start vs. Bartolo Colon from the As. Workman pitched better than well as he brought a no hitter into the 7th inning, however he would not play into the decision and the Sox would lose in extras.
Brandon Workman sure made an impression in his first major league start. Workman and Colon were in the middle of a pitchers duel and Workman did not give up a hit until the 7th inning. The Sox got the first lead when Pedroia hit an RBI single in the 6th to score Ellsbury. Sox 1-0. The Sox added another run in the 7th when Brock Holt hit an RBI single to score Carp. Workman gave up his first hit in the bottom of the 7th when he gave up an infield single to Coco Crisp. The As tied the game in that same inning when Workman gave up a 2 run HR to Donaldson. Sox 2-2. Workman gave up the lead, however he still looked pretty spectacular on the mound. His pitching line for the night was 103 pitches, 6.1 IP, 2 H, 2 R, 1 BB and 5 Ks.
Craig Breslow came out and finished off the 7th inning and also pitched a scoreless 8th. In the top of the 9th Jonny Gomes got himself ejected when he asked for time from the ump, didn't get it and then complained about it. It was a bizarre interaction. Koji Uehara came out and pitched 2 scoreless innings to keep the game going. In the 11th inning Matt Thorton, who was just acquired through trade, took the mound. A leadoff walk would end up coming back to bite Thorton when Donaldson hit an RBI single to have the As celebrating walk off style.
