The Red Sox sent Aaron Cook to the mound in place of Josh Beckett who was traded to the Dodgers earlier in the day. Cook was coming off 3 days rest and hoping to have a better outing than his last performance.
Cook looked shaky in the 1st inning allowing the first 3 batters to reach and 3 runs to score. Cook was able to get out of that with no more damage and give the offense a chance. In the bottom of the 2nd, Gomez hit his 1st major league HR to get the Sox on the board. Salty and Lavarnway then hit singles and were brought home by Mike Aviles hitting his 13th HR of the season. Sox 4-3. Gomez kept the hitting going in the 3rd when he hit a 2 run RBI to score Pedey and Ells. Salty hit a sac fly to score the 3rd run of the inning. Sox 7-3. The Sox added two more runs in the 4th with RBI singles from Ross and Gomez. Sox 9-3.
This game seemed clearly in hand and Cook was keeping them in the game. Cook pitched 6 strong inning and left the mound in line for a win. Andrew Miller took the mound in the 7th inning and that is when trouble started. Miller ended up giving up a single and then two walks to load the bases. Miller gave up a 2 run RBI to Gordon to cut the lead to 9-5. Miller was out of the game and Melancon was in. Melancon gave up an RBI ground rule double and then an RBI single to have the Sox leading 9-7. Melancon was out and Craig Breslow was in. Breslow gave up a run RBI triple to Moustakas to tie the game 9-9. Sighs. Ugh. I don’t think this is how Bobby V wrote it up. Breslow finally gets that 3rd out they needed and the 7th is over.
Breslow came out for the 8th and had himself a scoreless inning. Bailey pitched himself a nice 1-2-3 inning in the 9th in order to send the game to extra innings. Padilla was on the mound in the 10th and had himself a scoreless inning with 2 Ks. Junichi Tazawa was out of the game and took the mound for the 11th and 12th innings for the Sox. Tazawa had himself a nice 11th inning, however he allowed the go ahead run to score in the 12th with 2 outs. Tazawa was out of the game and Clayton Mortensen was in. Morty got the final out of the inning, but the damage had been done. The Sox bats went in order in the bottom of the 12th and the loss was in the books.
