The Red Sox had a chance to take the series in St. Louis behind Workman’s start last night. The game was pushed back an hour because of the game, but they were able to get it in. Workman has struggled in his last few starts and last night would be the same. Workman got the team down early and the bats weren’t able to battle back.
Workman gave up 3 runs in the 1st inning when he gave up a 2 run RBI double to Peralta and then an RBI single to Taveras. Sox 0-3. When a starting pitcher puts the team is such an early hole the team is rarely able to battle back. In the 3rd inning the Sox were able to get 2 of those runs back when Napoli and Vazquez both hit RBI singles. Sox 2-3. The Sox suddenly felt right back in this game. Workman was able to keep the score right where it was until the 5th inning when he gave up a solo homerun to Wong. Sox 2-4. Workman pitched into the 6th inning and was pulled in favor of Craig Breslow. Workman’s pitching line for the night was 96 pitches, 5.1 IP, 6 H, 4 R, 2 BB and 5 Ks.
Breslow was able to get the 2 outs to end the 6th inning and then they were off to the 7th inning. In the 7th Breslow wasn’t able to keep the Cardinals at bay when he gave up a solo HR to Wong. That was Wong’s 2nd homerun of the night and once again put the Sox in a 3 run hole. Sox 2-5. Breslow was done and Burke Badenhop came out to get the final out of the inning. Tommy Layne pitched a scoreless 8th inning, but the Sox offense weren’t able to get anything else going against the Cards pitching. The Sox lost the game and the series before heading out of rain soaked St. Louis.
