Each time the Red Sox have one of those games with an offensive explosion like they did on Sunday, we hope that it will be a spark to get this team on a roll and then without missing a beat they have a game like they did last night to spell our hopes. Jake Peavy took the mound for the Sox and pitched well, but the Sox bats on the other side couldn’t get anything against Cubs starter Jake Arrieta.
Jake Peavy is kind of on the bubble when it comes to the Sox rotation these days and his outing last night might have just showed a National League team that they might wanna see what the Sox would want for him. Peavy got the loss, but he pitched well enough to win if the Sox bats had anything going on. The game stayed scoreless until the 4th inning when Peavy walked Castillo and then gave up a 2 run HR to Schierholtz. Sox 0-2. Peavy pitched through the 6th inning and that was the only damage done. The Sox bullpen continue to be dominant and Badenhop, Breslow and Mujica finished it off for the home team.
On the other side, Jake Arrieta was pitching up a strong. He had a no hitter going well into the 8th inning. He was throwing a lot harder than I remember him throwing when he was with the Orioles. In the 8th with 2 outs, the struggling Stephen Drew came to the plate. Drew hit a single up the middle to put an end to Arrieta’s no hitter bid. Arrieta was done for the night and got a nice standing ovation from the Fenway crowd. The hit didn’t spark the Sox offense though since they weren’t able to get a run across the board and fell 0-2.
