The Red Sox hoped seeing a new foe would mean a change of pace for the struggling offense and pitching. Unfortunately Felix Doubront struggled and then left the game early with an apparent shoulder injury. The Sox offense came alive later in the game, but it was too little too late. The Sox have now lost 5 straight games and are 4 games under 500.
The game was scoreless until the 3rd inning when Doubront gave up a 2 run homerun to Encarnacion. Doubront followed that by giving up a solo HR in the 4th to Erik Kratz. Sox 0-3. In the 5th Doubront started the inning by giving up back to back doubles including an RBI to Melky Cabrera. Sox 0-4. Nieves came out for a meeting at the mound and the trainer was called and Doubront was out of the game. Dubi said that his shoulder felt numb. The Sox plan on sending him for an MRI on Wednesday to find out the extent of the injury. Edward Mujica was in the game to finish the inning. Mujica gave up a 2 run HR to Encarnacion to have the Jays leading 6-0.
In the bottom of the 5th the Sox bats finally got to work and got on the scoreboard. Jackie Bradley Jr hit an RBI double to score Brock Holt and then Pedroia hit an RBI double to score Bradley Jr. Sox 2-6. Mujica did give one of those runs right back in the top of the 6th when he gave up a solo HR to Melky Cabrera that clanked off the Pesky Pole. Sox 2-7. With 2 outs in the 6th Mujica was out of the game and Burke Badenhop was in. Badenhop got the final out of the inning. In the bottom of the 6th the Sox grabbed a couple more runs when Jonny Gomes hit a 2 run HR to the Monster. At first the umps did not call it a homerun, but after a brief review Gomes got to trot home. Sox 4-7. Badenhop pitched a scoreless 7th and then Breslow pitched a scoreless 8th inning. In the 8th inning the Sox threatened to score, but were unable to get anything else on the scoreboard. Junichi Tazawa got himself in a little bit of trouble in the top of the 9th, but was able to wiggle out of it. The Sox also threatened to score in the bottom of the inning, but came up short. The Sox had 2 batters on and no outs with Papi coming to the plate. Unfortunately Papi struck out and then Napoli hit into a game ending double play to seal their fate.
