The Red Sox celebrated the 2004 team prior to the game, however it didn’t overflow into the current team being able to notch down another win. The Red Sox once again were not able to play the role of spoiler as they fell to the Rays in the opening game of the 2 game series with Tampa.
Clay Buchholz took the mound for the Sox and the team was never able to overcome him giving up walks and a HR early in the game. Buchholz walked both Longoria and Scott in the 2nd and then gave up a 3 run HR to the Monster to Keppinger. Sox 0-3. The Sox grabbed one of those runs back in the bottom of the 2nd when Valencia hit an RBI single. Sox 1-3. In the bottom of the 3rd, the Sox scored another run when Price balked in a run. Sox 2-3. Buchholz kept trucking along until the 6th inning when he would find trouble once again. Buchholz gave up two singles and then got what we thought was a double play ball, however Iglesias threw the ball a little off course and pulled Buchholz off the bag. Buchholz would then give up an RBI single to Molina to score Keppinger and Pena. Sox 2-5. Buchholz would be done after 6 innings and Atchison would be in to start the 7th. Atchison pitched a scoreless 7th and then got one out in the 8th before Andrew Miller came into the game. Miller got the last 2 outs of the 8th and we were on to the 9th. Vicente Padilla pitched himself a scoreless 9th inning and handed any hope over to the Sox bats in the bottom of the 9th. Unfortunately, David Price was still on the mound and he was still dealing. Price not only pitched himself a complete game, but struck out 13 batters along the way.
Let’s hope that tomorrow the Red Sox can play the role of spoiler a wee bit better.
