While not major moves, the Red Sox front office continues to prepare the roster for September call up season adding depth with veteran signings.
Adding depth to the catcher position, the Red Sox signed 31 year old David Ross who was recently released in favor of a younger option Ryan Hannigan. Ross has a fair amount of power (17 homers in 311 ABs in 2007 and 21 homers in 247 ABs in 2006) and should compete for the back up job in September especially with Wakefield on the mend. It should also be noted that Ross’ presence in the organization is also some preparation should the Red Sox and Captain Jason Varitek part ways this offseason. While not the ideal starter, any depth is a good insurance policy.
The Red Sox also agreed to minor league contract with former Houston Astros outfielder Jason Lane who would be considered a likely September call up to provide further outfield depth down the stretch run. Lane is not likely to be the “impact” that previous late season outfielders Gabe Kapler, Dave Roberts, Eric Hinske, or Bobby Kielty were, but once again it doesn’t hurt to add experienced role players in September.
