The Red Sox hoped to shake off the loss of last night while playing a random 4pm day game on a Wednesday afternoon. Sox ace Jon Lester was on the mound against Brett Anderson of the A's. The Sox hoped to bring Lester to a 4-0 record and take the series from the A's.
Lester pitched 3 scoreless innings before letting the long ball tag him in the 4th. Young hit a 3 run HR to give the A's an early 3-0 lead. In the bottom of the 4th, the Sox bats got those 3 runs right back for Lester. Ortiz doubled and then Napoli hit an RBI double to bring Papi home. Sox 1-3. Stephen Drew hit an RBI triple to tie the game. I am sure that hit felt extra good to Drew who has been struggling at the plate. Sox 3-3.
In the 5th, the Sox bats gave the lead to Lester. Victorino hit an RBI double to score Ells. Sox 4-3. Then Papi hit an RBI single to score Victorino. Sox 5-3. Nava came into the game to pinch hit for Gomes and hit an RBI single to score Pedey. Sox 6-3. Lester took the mound in the 6th and got two outs, but wasn't able to get the 3rd. Lester's pitching line for the night was 115 pitches, 5.2 IP, 6 H, 3 R, 6 BB and 5 Ks.
Tazawa was in the game in the 6th and got the out that the Sox needed. Tazawa came back out in the 7th and ended up giving up an RBI single to Donaldson to bring the A's within 2 runs. Sox 6-4. With two outs, Tazawa was out and Miller was in. Miller got a strikeout and got out of the inning. Koji Uehara came in for the 8th gave up a leadoff HR to Young. The Sox were not clinging to a tiny 6-5 lead. Uehara got the next 3 batters in the 8th. Andrew Bailey took the mound looking for his 5th save of the season. Bailey had two outs when Jed Lowrie came to the plate. Lowrie hit what looked like a double down the right field line, however the umpire called it foul. It looks like Bailey and the Sox lucked out since it seems like the ball was fair. Bailey got Lowrie to K to end the inning and the Sox got the win.
