Sox Squeak a Win Past the Blue Jays: Thanks DMac!

The biggest piece of news that came out of last night’s game was Jon Lester leaving the mound after throwing 4 innings, striking out 5 and giving up no hits.  It was announced later that he has a left lat strain, which is the muscle just above his shoulder.  Lester said after the game he doesn’t think it will be a long term issue and hopes to avoid the DL.  However, he will miss his start on Sunday and he will be reassessed after the All Star Break.

Lester left the mound with a 3-0 lead.  The Sox got 2 runs in the 2nd when Papi doubled and then Tek doubled to bring him in.  JD Drew scored the second run in the inning with an RBI single.  The Sox scored the 3rd run in the 3rd inning with a solo HR by Pedroia.  Matt Albers came out in relief of Lester and pitched 2 scoreless innings.  Morales and Bard each also threw a scoreless inning to hand over the game to Papelbon in the 9th with a 3-0.  That’s when it got a wee bit hairy.  Pap gave up a single to Corey Patterson and then a HR to Jose Bautista to bring it to a close 3-2 lead.  Pap also gave up a single and a walk.  He had two outs, but two men on base when he was facing John McDonald.  Pap gave up a single to LF to McDonald, but thankfully DMac made a great throw to home and Tek blocked the plate to throw out Encarnacion at home.

THE RED SOX WIN!  Just barely…thanks DMac!
