The Red Sox came into the game winning the first two games of the series and had rookie Allen Webster on the mound looking for his first big league win with the team. Webster didn't pitch real deep into the game, but pitched well enough for the win.
The Sox bats gave Webster a lead in the first and never looked back. Pedroia hit a 2 RBI double to score Ellsbury and Victorino. Sox 2-0. In the 2nd the Sox added a run when Brandon Snyder hit his first HR with the Sox. Sox 3-0. In the 3rd was the first time that Webster found himself in any kind of trouble. The Padres had the bases loaded with no outs. Luckily Webster got out of the inning only allowing one run to score when Headley hit a sac fly to score Ciriaco. Sox 3-1. The Sox got that run right back in the 4th when Iglesias hit a ground rule double to score Napoli. Sox 4-1. The Padres scored their final run of the game in the 5th inning when Guzman hit a single to score Venable. Sox 4-2. Continuing to play seesaw with the score, the Sox scored a single run in the bottom of the 5th when Gomes hit an RBI single to score Napoli. Sox 5-2. Webster was done after 6 innings and his pitching line for the night was 97 pitches, 6 IP, 5 H, 2 R, 4 BB and 4 Ks.
In the bottom of the 6th the Sox added two more runs to the scoreboard when Papi hit a 2 RBI single to score Iggy and Ells. Sox 7-2. At this point in the game everyone in the Sox lineup had a hit. In the 7th inning Andrew Bailey came into the game. This was just the low leverage situation that he needed to hopefully have a good outing to build his confidence. Bailey did just that having a 1-2-3 inning with 2 Ks. Phew. I so want Bailey to get back to being that dominant pitcher we know he can be. Alex Wilson came on to pitch the 8th inning and even though he gave up a double and a walk, he pitched a scoreless inning. Jacoby Ellsbury started off the bottom of the 8th inning hitting his 2nd HR of the season. Sox 8-2. Wilson got the first out of the 9th inning and then handed the ball over to Craig Breslow to finish it off. Breslow gave up a double, but then got the next two batters in order.
Sox sweep and now lead the AL East by 4.5 games.
