The Red Sox actually won a game and hoped to be able to have two wins in a row. The Sox had rookie Rubby De La Rosa on the mound vs. former Cy Young winner R.A. Dickey. The Sox went out to an early lead, allowed the game to be tied in totally Red Sox fashion, went into extra innings and then had a monster of an 11th inning to put the game to bed. Mike Napoli hit a 3 run homerun in the 11th that I am not sure if it has come down to earth yet the following morning.
The Sox bats got all over R.A. Dickey’s knuckleball with scoring 3 runs in the 1st inning. Pedroia hit a 2 run homerun to start it off and then Middlebrooks hit an RBI double to pout the Sox up 3-0. The game stayed 3-0 until the 3rd when the Jays slowly, but surely started climbing back into this one. They scored their first run off of De La Rosa when Cabrera hit an RBI sac grounder to score Kawasaki from 3rd. Sox 3-1. In the 4th Kawasaki hit an RBI single and then they tied the game in the 5th when Encarnacion hit an RBI grounder to score Cabrera. We were all tied up 3-3 and De La Rosa was out of the game and Tommy Layne was in to finish it. Layne did hit job and got the 2 outs to finish the 5th, but the game was tied and the damage was done.
Alex Wilson pitched a scoreless 6th inning and then the Sox bats scraped a single run to get the lead back, albeit temporarily. In the 7th Cespedes hit an RBI single to score Brock Holt to have the Sox leading 4-3. Cespedes has absolutely been a breath of fresh air in the Sox lineup since he was sent here from the A’s. Unfortunately Alex Wilson would allow the Jays to tie it back up in the bottom of the inning when Jose Bautista hit a solo homerun. Sox 4-4. Wilson issued a walk and he was done for the inning and Badenhop came in and got the 3 outs Farrell was looking for. Badenhop pitched the 8th and then Mujica pitched the 9th to have the inning head on to extras.
Junichi Tazawa pitched a scoreless 10th inning and then the Sox bats exploded in the top of the 11th. Pedroia put the Sox on top with a 2 RBI single, but they weren’t done there. The inning really came apart for the Jays when Mike Napoli hit a massive 3 run homerun. The ball went up into the 5th deck at the Rogers Centre. It was a thing to see, I tell ya. To finish off the inning Allen Craig hit a 2 run homerun, his first in a Red Sox uniform. Sox 11-4. The Sox sent out Heath Hembree to finish off the bottom of the 9th. He wasn’t able to have a shutout inning, nothing even close to it, but with the offense the Sox put up in the top of the inning it didn’t really matter. Hembree gave up a 2 run RBI double to Navarro and then an RBI double to Valencia. Sox 11-7. Hembree for the 3rd out the Sox needed though and they got their 2nd win in a row. 2 wins doesn’t equal a win streak, but it sure feels like it does.
