Sox Take First Game From Blue Jays!

The Sox were heading up north to take on the Blue Jays and this time we had our fingers crossed that Dice-K could make it out of the 2nd inning and that the Sox wouldn’t be swept up by the Jays again.

Dice-K not only made it out of the 2nd inning, but he was able to make it into the 6th inning.  Dice-K wasn’t lights out, but in comparison of his other outings this year, he pitched well.  Dice-K had a bizarre 3rd inning where he allowed 3 runs to score without allowing a hit.  Dice-K loaded the bases with a hit by pitch and two walks.  Dice-K then threw 2 wild pitches which were handled badly by Lavarnway and 2 runs scored.  The 3rd run was scored by an RBI sac grounder.  Sox 0-3.  Lavarnway made up for any defensive miscues in the 4th when he hit a 3 run HR to tie the game.  Sox 3-3.  In the 5th, the Sox took the lead when Aviles got to third by using an old high school football move to elude the tag from Lawrie.  That gave the Sox a chance and Nava put them ahead on a 2 run RBI from Daniel Nava.  Sox 5-3.

In the bottom of the 6th, Dice-K gave up a triple to Lind with one out and that would be it for him for the night.  Bobby V came out to get him and he was replaced by Mortensen.  Morty gave up an RBI single to Escobar to bring the Jays within a run.  Sox 5-4.  That would be the book on Dice-K for the evening.  Sure, he was not spectacular, but given the expectations, I think he pitched pretty gosh darn well.  Tazawa came out and pitched a scoreless 7th inning and then handed the ball over to Padilla in the 8th.  Padilla ended up giving up a leadoff single and then an RBI double to Lawrie to tie the game.  Sox 5-5.  With one out, Bobby V came out to get Padilla and handed the ball over to Carpenter.  Carpenter got the two outs to get out of the inning with the game still tied.  The Sox bats took to the top of the 9th and got to work.  Ellsbury and Ross both singled in front of Gomez who hit an RBI triple for the Sox to take the lead 7-5.   Lavarnway hit a sac fly to score Gomez to give the Sox one more insurance run.  Sox 8-5.  Bailey came out for the 9th and got his 3rd save of the season.

Ahh, the Red Sox won.  The water is dirty.  I also thought it was ironic on the night when Bobby V came out and said that this was the weakest September roster in history that all 8 RBIs were by players who had started the season in Pawtucket.  I’m glad we had all those callups last night!
