The Red Sox finished off the series against the Orioles with Felix Doubront on the mound vs. Wei-Yin Chen. Doubront wasn’t as sharp as Lester and Lackey, but he still showed why pitching is a huge positive for the Sox this season. The bats scored just enough runs to have Doubront snag his first win of the season.
The Sox grabbed the first run of the game in the 2nd inning when Will Middlebrooks hit into a doubleplay, but with no outs Xander Bogaerts crossed the plate. Sox 1-0. The Sox got another run in the 3rd inning when Papi hit an RBI single to score Jackie Bradley Jr. Sox 2-0. In the 4th, David Ross in his first game of the season hit an RBI single to bring Bogaerts home. Sox 3-0.
While the Sox were getting a run here or there, Doubront looked pretty sharp in the first few innings. He was cruising along until the 4th inning when he had his first hiccup. Dubi gave up an RBI double to Weiters and then an RBI single to Young. Sox 3-2. Doubront settled down and had a 1-2-3 5th inning and then the Sox got him an insurance run in the 6th inning when Bradley Jr hit an RBI single to score Middlebrooks. Sox 4-2.
Doubront would end up needed that insurance run. In the 6th inning he gave up a single to Davis and then had an 11 pitch at bat with Adam Jones before finally getting him out. Farrell decided that in the first start of the season that the at bat left Dubi pretty gassed, so he came out to get him. Brandon Workman came in to the game to relieve Doubront. Workman ended up allowing Chris Davis to score on a wild pitch to have the Sox clinging to a 4-3 lead. However Workman was able to get the out and get out of the inning. Doubront’s official line for the night was 76 pitches, 5.1 IP, 6 H, 3 R, 1 BB and 4 Ks.
Chris Capuano came in for his first official appearance with the Red Sox this season and had himself a crisp 1-2-3 inning. Tazawa came out in the 8th inning and pitched a scoreless inning before handing the ball over to closer Koji Uehara. Last night was Koji’s 39th birthday and showed that he is just as dominant a year older. Koji had his usual 1-2-3 inning and snagged his first official save of the season.
