Sox Take Series Against O’s Behind Joe Kelly’s Strong Start

The Red Sox finished their last away game with a Sunday day game against the Orioles.  The game was Joe Kelly on the mound for the Sox vs. Miguel Gonzalez for the O’s.  Joe Kelly looks to be in the mix of the arms competing for the 2015 rotation and he made a pretty strong case in his performance yesterday.

The Sox got on the board right off the bat.  Mookie Betts hit a leadoff homerun against Gonzalez.  The Sox had a chance to get more in the inning, but it ended up being just the one single run.  The game stayed 1-0 for a while until the Sox grabbed another run in the 5th inning when Cespedes hit an RBI single to score Weeks.  The Sox scored their 3rd run of the game in the 6th inning when David Ross hit a solo homerun.  Sox 3-0.

The Sox and Joe Kelly seemed to be cruising to victory, however he would find the most struggle of his outing in the 6th inning.  Kelly gave up an RBI double to Lough and then an RBI groundout to Nelson Cruz to have the Sox clinging to a one run lead.  Kelly was able to get out of the inning with the lead and pitch a scoreless 7th inning before his outing was done for the afternoon.  Kelly wasn’t perfect, but he sure looked like a pretty decent option for the rotation in 2015.  Tommy Layne got the first out of the 8th before handing the ball over to Burke Badenhop. Badenhop got himself in a little bit of trouble allowing 2 singles, however he was able to get the 2 outs he needed to get out of the inning with the Sox still ahead.  The current closer Edward Mujica took the mound in the 9th and secured his 8th save and the win for the team before heading home for their last homestand.

Red Sox 3  Orioles 2  BOXSCORE

WP: Kelly (3-2)  LP: Gonzalez (9-9)  SV: Mujica (8)
