The Red Sox played 19 innings the day before and didn’t know if they’d get the game in last night because of the rain. Luckily enough for the Sox, the rain was consistent, but playable. The Sox had Doug Fister on the mound who continues to look like a smart pick up from Dombrowski. Fister pitched 7 strong innings and the Sox offense gave him plenty of run support to get the win and the series. The Yankees were rained out last night, so the Sox moved to 4 games up in the AL East.
As it has been the pattern with the Sox lately, the opposing team got on the board first. Fister issued a walk to Montero with the bases loaded to force in a run in the top of the 1st. Sox 0-1. The Sox tied it right up though in the bottom of the 1st when Benintendi hit an RBI groundout to score Nunez. Sox 1-1. No one scored again until the bottom of the 4th when the Sox took the lead and it would be for good. Bogaerts hit an RBI triple, Devers hit an RBI single and then Bradley Jr hit a 2 run homer to have the Sox up 5-1. The Sox tacked on another run in the 6th when Bradley was safe by way off an error and Devers scored on the play. Sox 6-1.
Fister pitched through the 7th inning and that was pretty impressive all in itself, given how dreary and rainy it was. Fister’s pitching line for the night was 113 pitches, 7 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 3 BB and 9 Ks. Fister had a great outing, especially given how many innings the Sox bullpen had to pitch the night before. Joe Kelly came out and pitched a scoreless 8th inning before handing the ball over to Matt Barnes in the 9th. Barnes pitched a scoreless 9th to give the team the win and the series.
