Clay Buchholz has shown that if anyone on the Sox staff should be considered an ace, he is clearly leading that race. Buchholz struggled early on in the season, but since the All Star Break he has consistently shown why he is so valuable to the team. Buchholz took the ball yesterday and put in another good performance. Clay didn’t get the win, but he sure kept the team in the game.
Buchholz started out like every other pitcher on the Sox staff by giving up a run in the 1st inning. Buch gave up the solo run with an RBI single to Escobar to score Encarnacion. Sox 0-1. In the top of the 2nd, the Sox got that run right back when Cody Ross hit his 21st HR of the season. Game tied 1-1. Cody Ross has shown time and time again why I am going to be very upset if the Sox don’t find a way to bring him back. The Sox took the lead in the 4th when Salty hit an RBI single to score Ross. Sox 2-1. It didn’t take the Jays long to get the game tied again when Lind hit a sac fly RBI to Gose from 3rd. It was an unearned run since Ciriaco made a fielding error in the inning, but the run scored all the same. Buchholz stayed in the game and pitched 7 strong innings. Clay’s line for the night was 111 pitches, 7 IP, 2 R, 1 ER, 5 BB, 5 Ks.
The Sox bats almost gave Clay the lead in both the 7th and 8th innings, but they were unable to get the run across the plate. Craig Breslow took the mound in the 8th and had himself a nice 1-2-3 inning. The Sox bats were finally able to get a run across the plate in the bottom of the 8th. Salty got a leadoff double and then Pedro Ciriaco continued to be clutch by getting the big RBI hit to plate Salty. Sox 3-2. Andrew Bailey came on for the 9th looking for his 4th save of the season. Bailey gave up a single to Gose, but retired every other batter he faced.
Red Sox Win! Tis a good thing. Water very dirty.
