Sox Were Cooked in Loss to Tigers

The Red Sox were hoping to not only take the series from the Tigers, but sweep them out of town.  However, Aaron Cook had another poor start and ended up giving up back to back homeruns in the loss.

Aaron Cook took the mound for the Red Sox last night and started to show signs that he might not be long for the rotation.  Cook was able to get through the first 3 innings with no damage.  In the 4th inning, Cook gave up a double to Prince Fielder and then with Prince on 2nd, Cook threw the ball over and ended up hitting Fielder in the head.  It was scary for a little bit.  Luckily, Fielder was ok and stayed in the game.  Next Cook gave up a single to Boesch and the game was tied 1-1. In the 5th is when the wheels just fell off Cook’s start. Cook gave up an RBI single to Jackson to give the Tigers the lead 2-1.  The 3rd Tigers run scored on an RBI groundout from Berry.  Cook went from bad to worse when he gave up back to back homeruns to Cabrera and Fielder.  Sox 1-6.  Bobby V had seen enough and pulled Cook in favor of our new reliever Craig Breslow.  Breslow got the out we needed to get out of the inning however the damage was done.  Breslow stayed on the mound in the 6th and pitched a scoreless inning.  Mark Melancon took the mound for the 7th and got two outs before Bobby V decided to go with Andrew Miller for the final out.  In the 8th inning Miller stayed on the mound and ended up giving up a solo HR to Delmon Young.  While I am not going to say Miller did not pitch well, it is frustrating when the Sox bats are trying to climb back into this one to just have the Sox pitcher give the run right back.  Sox 5-7.  Tazawa came out and got the final out of the 8th inning as well as pitching a scoreless 9th.

The Sox bats fought in this one, but were unable to make up for the poor start by Cook.  The Sox got a run in the 1st inning when Cody Ross hit an RBI single to score Jacoby Ellsbury.  Sox 1-0.  After the Tigers took a big lead in the 5th, the Sox bats got back to work in the 6th.  The Sox had the bases loaded and no outs.  Salty hit into a double play, however a run scored.  Sox 2-6.  Middlebrooks then hit an RBI single to score Gonzo.  Sox 3-6.  Pedro Ciriaco continued to show his value when he hit a RBI single to bring the Sox within 2 runs.  Sox 4-6.  In the 7th, Carl Crawford hit his 2nd homerun of the season to bring the Sox within a run at the time.  Sox 5-6.  Unfortunately, that would be the last time to Sox would be able to crack the scoreboard.

The Sox took the series from the Tigers, however a sweep would have been real real nice.
