Given the horrific events since the game, it seems a little surreal to be posting the game recap, but it's a nice distraction to all other things going on in Boston. On behalf of everyone at Fenway West, my thoughts and prayers go out to anyone who was hurt or lost loved ones in Boston today.
The Sox were looking to sweep the Rays out of town with a strong pitching performance from Ryan Dempster. Dempster continued the trend of stellar starting pitching and left the mound with a teeny tiny lead. Dempster only gave up one run in the 4th inning with a HR to Longoria. Dempster pitching line for the night was 101 pitches, 7 IP, 1 R, 2 BB and 10 Ks.
The Sox bats gave Dempster a quick little lead in the first inning when Ellsbury started the game with a triple and then was plated by a Victorino groundout. Sox 1-0. The Rays tied it up with Longo's HR, but the Sox were able to grab the lead back in the 5th when Salty hit a solo HR. Sox 2-1.
Uehara came into the game in the 8th inning for Dempster. Uehara continued his dominance and had himself a quick 1-2-3 inning. Bailey came in for his first save opportunity of 2013 since Hanrahan is battling an injury. Unfortunately, it took Bailey all of two batters to have his first blown save of the season. Bailey gave up a single, a stolen base and then an RBI single. Bailey hunkered down after that and got the next 3 outs in order.
The Sox bats were out in the 9th and able to pick Bailey up and turn a blown save into a win. Pedey walked and then Mike Napoli smacked a ball off the Monster to score Pedroia. This was the second walk off win from the Sox in the span of a weekend.
Red Sox 3 Rays 2 BOXSCORE
