Sox Win As Lackey Continues to Shine

The Sox are facing the Padres for 3 games before heading out of town to start a west coast trip.  John Lackey was on the mound for the Sox vs. Padres rookie Robbie Erlin.  Lackey has been on quite a roll lately and that would continue last night as he dominated the Padres lineup and pitched 8 strong innings.

Lackey looked strong out of the gate and just kept rolling.  His fastball was hitting 95 mph at times which is more velocity than we've basically ever seen from Lackey in his time with the Sox.  Lackey was also showing some great control and command as he worked through the Padres order.  The game was tied 0-0 until the bottom of the 4th when the Sox bats finally gave Lackey a lead to work with.  The Sox had the bases loaded with one out and Snyder hit a bases clearing double.  Snyder was thrown out trying to stretch it to a triple, but the 3 runs scored none the less.  Sox 3-0.  In the 6th the Sox added another run when Iglesias hit an RBI single.  Sox 4-0.

The only run that Lackey would give up during his outing would be a leadoff HR to Guzman in the top of the 7th.  Sox 4-1.  Lackey pitched into the 8th inning for the first time in his Sox career and was able to easily finish the inning.  Lackey's pitching line for the night was 103 pitches, 8 IP, 6 H, 1 R, 1 BB and 6 Ks.  Uehara came out in the 9th and had himself a 1-2-3 inning to grab his 5th save of the season.

Red Sox 4  Padres 1  BOXSCORE

WP: Lackey (6-5)  LP: Erlin (1-1)  SV: Uehara (5)
