The Red Sox were taking on both the Yankees and the rain the final game of their weekend series. The game already had a 45 minute weather delay before the game even started, even though it never rained during that delay. Both teams would have their best pitcher on the mound, so neither team wanted to burn their starter if it was going to rain early in the game.
Buchholz continued his dominant ways in the start against New York. Buchholz had been skipped in his last start and then delayed from a Friday start because of a sore AC joint. Red Sox Nation was collectively holding their breath when he took the mound on Sunday night. Buch relieved a lot of people's worries when he looked like the same guy who came into the game with a 7-0 record. Buchholz pitched 5 strong innings and would have been out there for more, but the game was sent into a rain delay. Buchholz never allowed a Yankee to even get past first base during his 5 innings of work. Clay's line for the night was 71 pitches, 5 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 1 BB and 4 Ks.
During those 6 innings the Sox bats were able to crack the scoreboard against Kuroda. The game was tied 0-0 until the 4th inning when Napoli hit an RBI groundout to score Pedroia. Sox 1-0. In the 5th inning, Jose Iglesias hit a HR to left field to give the Sox a 2-0 lead and then in the 6th inning David Ortiz hit a solo HR of his own to bring the lead to 3-0. After Papi's HR the sky opened up and it began pouring. The tarp was called and the game was in delay. At one point during the delay the thunder was so loud it scared the bejesus out of both teams in the dugout. After a delay of 37 minutes, the two teams got ready to resume play, but not for long. Kuroda got the outs to end the 6th inning and as Andrew Miller took the mound the sky opened up again. Miller entered the game, but never threw a pitch. The game ended up being called and the Red Sox won a rain shortened game. Clay Bucholz not only gets credit for the win, but for a complete game.
There was a lot of rain last night and that water sure was dirty. The Red Sox left the Bronx with a 3 game lead in the AL East. The team is off on Monday and then face the Texas Rangers who swept them the last time they met.
Red Sox 3 Yankees 0 BOXSCORE F/6
