With 2 games left in the regular season, the Sox desperately needed a win and had Erik Bedard on the mound. The Sox were able to eek out a win, however at the same time the Yanks weren’t able to put away the Rays so we are still tied in the wild card race.
Bedard gave up a run in the bottom of the 1st on a Guerrero RBI double to have the Sox down 0-1 early. However, in the 3rd the Sox got back in the lead with Jacoby Ellsbury hitting his 32nd homerun of the season. Ells is just having himself such a special season and being so SO clutch down the stretch! Sox lead 2-1. In the 4th, Ryan Lavarnway who was in the game catching since Salty was out with a bruised collarbone hit a 3 run HR to put the Sox up 5-1. That was Ryan’s first homerun in the majors. Of course, this should be no surprise to anyone who has watched Lavarnway play in the minors since he has just killed the ball.

In the 4th, Bedard gave 2 of those runs right back when he gave up a 2 run HR to Matt Wieters. Sox lead 5-3. With 2 batters on and one out, Bedard was out of the game and Alfredo Aceves was in. Bedard was okay, not great. His line for the night was 3.1 IP, 5 H, 3 R, 3 BBs and 6Ks. Aceves got the 2 outs in the inning and was on his way.
In the 6th, Marco Scutaro hit his 7th HR of the season to have the Sox leading 7-3. Aceves gave up a solo HR to Adam Jones in the bottom of the 6th, but that is the only run he’d give up in the 2.2 innings he pitched. Once again, Aceves has been a godsend for the Sox. He’s just been there for the Sox in anyway we needed him and gotten the job DONE. Sox lead 7-4. In the 8th, Ryan Lavarnway hit his SECOND HR of the game and put the Sox up 8-4. Lavarnway is showing a lot of people who haven’t seen him what many in the minors have been very excited about all year long. Great job Lava!
Bard came out in the 8th inning and once again struggled. Bard gave up an RBI single to Davis and then an RBI single to Reimold. Sox lead 8-6. Papelbon came on for the 9th and he also had a wee bit of a hiccup, but still was able to get the save. Pap gave up singles to Hardy and Guerrero. Then a run scored on a sac grounder from Wieters. Pap got the 3rd out on a long at bat from Adam Jones that ended when he grounded out.
Red Sox WIN! Go out and do it again tomorrow boys!
