The Red Sox came into this game hoping to right the ship and get back to their winning ways. The Sox offense wasn't able to score a single run for Lackey the night before, but that would not be able to be a problem last night. Wright would only last an inning, but in the end the Sox would bash away on Astros pitching and win easily.
Steven Wright was making his first major league start, but it would not last long. Wright's knuckleball was moving all over the place, which is usually a good thing, but Lavarnway wasn't able to catch it at all. During the inning Lavarnway had 4 passed balls. The Astros scored 3 runs in the inning when Grossman and Barnes scored on passed balls and then Wallace scored on a RBI sac grounder. Sox 0-3. In the 2nd inning Wright was done and Brandon Workman came into the game. Workman gave up a 2 run HR to Grossman to have the Astros leaving 5-0.
The Sox offense got on the scoreboard in the 3rd when Ellsbury hit a 2 run HR and then Ortiz hit an RBI single. Sox 3-5. This game suddenly didn't feel so hopeless. Unfortunately, Workman gave one of those runs right back when he gave up a solo HR to Wallace in the bottom of the inning. In the 4th the Astros scored another run when Workman gave up an RBI single to Villar. Sox 3-7.
In the 5th inning the Astros starter Lyles found himself in trouble again. The Astros manager left him in probably in hopes he could get through the inning and be in line for he win. Instead he ended up with the loss. Victorino and Pedey both hit RBI doubles and then Carp hit into an RBI groundout to have the Sox within a run. Ryan Lavarnway came to the plate and hit a 2 run RBI double to have the Sox take the lead. Sox 8-7. In the 6th the Sox added on when Pedey and Papi both hit RBI singles. Sox 10-7. The game got blown open when Jonny Gomes came in to pinch hit and hit a 3 run homer. Sox 13-7. In the bottom of the 6th the Astros got a couple of runs back when Grossman hit an RBI single and Altuve hit an RBI groundout. Sox 13-9. In the top of the 7th Jacoby Ellsbury hit a towering HR, his 2nd of the night. Later in the inning Gomes hit himself an RBI single to have the Sox leading 15-9.
In the 7th Drake Britton took the mound for the Sox. So far he's been very impressive since he's been called up to the Sox. Britton pitched a scoreless 7th and gave up a solo HR to Elmore in the 8th. Sox 15-10. Rubby De La Rosa made his Red Sox debut when he took the mound in the 9th. De La Rosa had himself a nice 1-2-3 inning including two strikeouts. It was a bash fest on both sides, but the Sox came out with the win when all was said and done.
