The Philadelphia 76ers have gotten great production out of Spencer Hawes this season. He is averaging 15.3 points, 9.2 rebounds, 3.1 assists, and 1.7 blocks per game. That is really good, he’s doing a little bit of everything this year, he has shocked a lot of people. There are also a lot of other good centers in the NBA, where does Hawes rank among them?
Points- Hawes is averaging 15.3 points per game this season, which ranks fourth among centers in the NBA. He is a great outside shooter, unlike most centers nowadays. He can also score in the paint, so he has many ways of attacking.
Rebounds- Hawes is averaging 9.2 rebounds per game this season, which ranks seventh among centers in the NBA. He’s seven foot one, so he’s slightly taller than almost all of the centers in the league. He definitely does take advantage of his height. Rebounding is the most important stat for centers in my opinion, and Hawes is very good at it.
Blocks- Hawes is averaging 1.7 blocks per game this season, which is very good. His 1.7 blocks per game rank fifth among centers in the NBA. Blocks are pretty important for centers, and Hawes is very good at blocking shots.
Assists- Hawes is averaging 3.1 assists per game this season, which is really good for a center. His 3.1 assists rank second among all centers in the NBA. Hawes’ ability to pass is very impressive. There aren’t too many centers in the league that can pass well, but Hawes is one of them. I know that assists and passing ability aren’t too important for centers, but they are two good qualities to have.
Field Goal Percentage- Spencer Hawes’ field goal percentage is .500 this season, which is 25th among centers in the NBA. This is because he shoots more jump shots than the average NBA center does, so of course his field goal percentage is going to be down a bit. .500 is still a decent field goal percentage.
Hawes also has a .438 field goal percentage, which is first among eligible centers. This stat doesn’t apply to a lot of centers in the NBA, because Hawes is one of the only good three point shooting centers. Three point percentage isn’t too important of a stat for most centers, but it is for Hawes, because he takes a lot of them per game, so his three point percentage is definitely important.
As you know by now, Hawes is one of the top centers in most of the stats that matter for centers, the only part of his game that is lacking is his field goal percentage, but that’s because he has a different playing style than most centers, and that’s not a bad thing at all. Hawes is a great player, so yes, based on his performance so far this season, I would say that Spencer Hawes is a top center in the NBA.
