Sports Media Weekly Podcast No. 21

Here’s a new edition of the Sports Media Weekly podcast. Due to our work schedules, Keith Thibault of Sports Media Journal and I taped a day later than usual. However, we were able to talk about the latest and greatest in sports media news.

We talked about the upcoming Super Bowl and what rating we expect for CBS. Keith and I also talked about the ads and the pregame coverage by CBS, ESPN and NFL Network. And we can’t forget about the ratings for the Pro Bowl on Sunday which were very good.

From there, we explored the Vancouver Winter Olympics which begin next week. In addition, we discussed the possibility of CBS and Turner Sports teaming up on a bid for the NCAA Tournament in case the NCAA opts out of its current contract with CBS and expands from 65 to 96 teams.

Then we broached on the launch of the Bloomberg Sports fantasy baseball program that was unveiled in New York on Sunday.

Our guest this week is Indianapolis Star Senior Editor for Sports, Jim Lefko, and Keith and I asked him about his paper’s coverage of the Super Bowl this week. With the Colts being in the Big Game and the Star being the paper of record for the team, Jim talks about the number of staffers covering the Super Bowl, how being in the Super Bowl for the second time in three years is becoming old hat for the Star. Also, we talk about how coverage plans have changed with the Star going from a newspaper first publication to a 24 hour news operation with its website plus video.

Lots of good stuff to discuss and quite an action packed podcast. You can either go to iTunes to download this week’s edition or find the podcast right here.
