Another Wednesday and it means another edition of the Sports Media Weekly podcast. Once again, Keith Thibault of Sports Media Journal and yours truly talk about the news of the week.
We start by discussing the great ratings for the Kentucky Derby on Saturday and how NBC is increasing the viewership by appealing to women. Then we talk about the passing of Ernie Harwell and how we’re seeing fewer and fewer old school announcers like Vin Scully of the Los Angeles Dodgers, Dave Niehaus of Seattle and Jerry Coleman in San Diego. We moved on to Boston Sports Blogapalooza which I attended on Sunday And to wrap up the segment, we discussed the excellent ratings for both the NBA and NHL Playoffs.
Our guest this week is Leon Schweir, the Senior Vice President of Production and Executive Producer at Versus. Since the network is in the midst of NHL postseason coverage, we spend most of our interview on the NHL playoffs and the approach the network takes towards airing games every night throughout the first three rounds.
Leon also was Vice President of Production and Executive Producer at the Big Ten Network so we ask him his experiences in starting up a new network.
