Sports Media Weekly Podcast No. 37

It’s time for another edition of the Sports Media Weekly Podcast. Our guest this week is Pawtucket Red Sox radio voice Dan Hoard who also calls the University of Cincinnati Bearcats football and basketball games. And he’ll be calling the Cincinnati Bengals exhibition games on TV in August.

But before I tell what we discuss with Dan, Keith Thibault of Sports Media Journal and I talk about the news of the week. That includes our disdain for writers and sports radio hosts who complain about the World Cup and feel the public should not watch the event. We also look at the big ratings for ESPN/ABC and Univision for the start of the World Cup.

We then move to the college football machinations involving the Big 10, Big 12 and Pac 10, which lead to Nebraska leaving the Big 12 for the Big 10, Colorado leaving the Big 12 for the Pac 10 and Texas leading 9 other teams to remain part of the Big 12 with more TV money being shared by those teams remaining in the conference. Keith and I talk about what this means for the Big 12 and how Texas will start its own TV network.

The U.S. Open at Pebble Beach kicks off on Thursday and that means primetime coverage on ESPN and NBC throughout the weekend. Keith and I opine on how much we like primetime golf.

And we close out our news segment discussing the purchase of The Big Lead by Fantasy Sports Ventures (Fang’s Bites is a member of the FSV network) and the start of several local blogging sites by SB Nation.

As previously mentioned, our guest this week is Dan Hoard, the voice of the Pawtucket Red Sox, the Triple A minor league affiliate of the Boston Red Sox, the voice of University of Cincinnati football and basketball and this summer, the voice of the Cincinnati Bengals exhibition games on TV. He’s a busy man.

Keith and I talk about how Dan got started in broadcasting, starting from his native Western New York, eventually moving to Cincinnati as a sports TV anchor, then going to radio to call the Bearcats.

Dan discusses how he got the Pawsox job and how difficult it is for him to commute between Rhode Island and Cincinnati for both gigs.

Of course, I had to ask Dan on the story of how Red Sox prospect Daniel Nava would leave tickets for ESPN’s Erin Andrews at every game and the photographic proof behind it.

A good podcast and one I enjoyed participating in. You can find the podcast on iTunes by searching “Sports Media Journal” and subscribing to it so you can listen every week. Or if you want to just listen to this week’s edition, go here.

We have some good guests over the next couple of weeks so keep your RSS feeds updated.
