Sports Media Weekly Podcast No. 44 – Lisa Horne

Today, the guest on the Sports Media Weekly Podcast is the excellent college football writer for Fox Sports.com, Lisa Horne. I’ll go into her segment further into this post.

As usual, Keith Thibault of Sports Media Journal and I discussed the news of the week. We began the segment by discussing the 7 hour expansion of SportsCenter onto ESPNews. Keith isn’t necessarily a fan of the expansion thinking it’s overkill. I don’t like it on the grounds that the SportsCenter brand is infringing on the ESPNews brand which ESPN has worked hard to maintain.

We then opine on the “reimagining” of ESPN The Magazine which I have yet to touch upon here on Fang’s Bites, but I will later this week. Keith and talk about the focusing an issue on one sport and if that will hurt the publication or if it will help. Keith thinks it will help. I think it’s narrowcasting and will hurt in the long run.

Then we talk about the release of the full NBA schedules on TNT, NBA TV and ESPN/ABC.

Keith and I review my post on “Why Do We Hate Chris Berman” and why he annoys viewers (in rebuttal, Bruce Allen at Boston Sports Media Watch has a piece on “Why I Don’t Hate Chris Berman“).

And we look into the tremendous ratings for the Pro Football Hall of Fame Game this past Sunday and what it could mean for the NFL this season.

In the second segment, Keith and I talk with Lisa Horne about her career at Fox Sports.com, the college football conference machinations that took place earlier this summer, what a Pac 10 TV network would mean for the conference. We also talked about her picks for the BCS National Championship Game and I also asked Lisa about her love for the Boston Celtics and what it means to be a C’s fan living in Los Angeles.

Overall, a very good podcast and Lisa’s a great guest. Head on over to iTunes to subscribe to the podcast by searching for “Sports Media Journal”. You can also listen to it right here.
